ABSTRACT
The performance of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems in optical communication networks is susceptible to distortion due to amplified spontaneous emission noise (ASE), chromatic dispersion (CD), polarization mode dispersion (PMD), self-phase modulation (SPM), cross phase modulation (XPM), Four wave mixing (FWM), etc. linear and nonlinear effects of optical signal degradation. This paper aims to model, study and compare different approaches for compensation of optical signal distortions. Simulation models of single-channel and 8-channel WDM optical systems using the Return-to-Zero (RZ-DB) Duobinary modulation method, with a data rate of 100 Gb/s, a channel spacing of 100 GHz and a transmission distance of 360 km, are
developed and investigated. Bit Error Rate (BER), eye diagram, and Quality factor (Q-factor) were used to evaluate performance.
