ABSTRACT
This article presents a historical overview of the status of the mentally ill from the late Middle Ages to the reforms of Philippe Pinel. The main emphasis is placed on the evolution of the attitude towards patients. The places of accommodation, such as Bedlam, as well as the methods and means of treatment are examined. The psychiatric reform of Philippe Pinel and the historical change in attitude and therapy towards the mentally ill are traced.
